ASKWye – Issue 10 – Tourniquets Don’t Belong Around Your Neck. Still.

Ask WYE fields a question from listener Tom directed at resident EMS expert Justin Schorr about the use of tourniquets (TQs).  We all remember the mantra “Life over limb!” when taught about stopping the blood flow to an injury, but is that still the case?

HM and MC discuss the use of TQs by Law Enforcement, EMS and even the civilian population and just how useful they really are…or aren’t.

  • Should LEOs be carrying more than 1 TQ on their person at all times?
  • Are Paramedics hesitant to apply TQs, and is that a bad thing?
  • Should Active Shooter training for civilians (Run, Hide, Fight) include TQ and basic first aid training?
