Ask WYE – Issue 14 – How and When to Specialize

Another great question from our audience asks our fire, Police and EMS experts when, and how, to specialize.

Specialization in public safety can range from an officer doing traffic, SWAT, investigations, prevention or custody. Firefighters can specialize in haz-mat, USAR and ARFF to name a few. Even in EMS one can choose Helicopter training, educator, tactical or any number of clinical specialties.

But how can a person new in the field know when, and how, to specialize? That’s where WYE comes in.

Fire and EMS expert Justin the Happy Medic and Law Enforcement expert Jason, Motorcop, share their first hand experiences specializing in their own fields as well as sharing a few tales from those they know.

Specializing can be tough, but it isn’t the end of the road. You can choose one, then move onto another if that doesn’t work out.

Have a listen and see what the guys think you should do if considering to specialize in your particular field!

Speaking of specializing…Justin throws in the rare ASK BOLO for a friend and his fiction project, Itty Bitty Writing Space.
