Ask WYE – Issue 36 – With great mustache comes great responsibility

Mrs. MC dove into the studio as we were firing up the microphones and asked about firefighters and their love of mustaches. Like any topic on this show, the guys immediately move on to something else, but kind of in the same vein: Professional appearance.

All public safety agencies have some kind of grooming and uniform standard, but where did it come from and has it evolved with the times? Sounds like in many places that answer is no.

Officers all over the Nation are made to cover up sleeve tattoos, but should they have to keep wearing long sleeves in 100 degree heat just because an old rule book says so?

What about hair style and color? Shouldn’t we be able to freely express ourselves while still serving the community? And who decides if a tattoo or piercing or hair color is “in good taste?”
