ASK WYE – Issue 7 – Don’t Get Stuck

Another great question comes our way from the Speakpipe icon on our homepage to ask about something that can derail your career:  Needle sticks.  While the guys answer each of Jeff’s questions they also discuss some common sense approaches to preventing needle sticks for police and EMS as well as address what to do if you do get stuck.

• What are good techniques for searching suspects and patients to avoid needle sticks?
• Are needle impervious gloves a help or hindrance in the field?
• What should we do if we do get stuck on duty?

The guys also talk about “dirty” needles and why that may not be as ominous as you think while getting in a few good points from MC about the extent to which he has authority to conduct searches.

Does your Department have a needle stick hotline or policy in place?  If not, they should.
