Facial Recognition – No Big Deal or Privacy Risk?

Happy Medic brings Motorcop a story from around the internets about new technology being placed into the hands of law enforcement: Facial Recognition.

While far from widespread (and accurate) the early testing is apparently following the same track as early license plate tracking and is gaining acceptance in many law enforcement circles.

While proponents claim “If you’ve got nothing to hide, why should you care?” HM has a concern about who besides law enforcement has access to the data.

  • Could retailers purchase this information to better target advertising based on places your face has been?
  • Could children’s faces be tracked and accessed via hacking?
  • Will movements of the innocent be discarded or kept for later review by law enforcement?
  • Is everyone blowing this WAY out of proportion?

Recent studies are showing the programming is flawed and having quite a hard time identifying females and those with darker skin tones

Perhaps the technology needs far more research, and discussion, before deployment.
