Motorcop Defunds the Police – Minneapolis and Beyond Part III
Protesters these days have to get a PR firm or focus group together before rolling out some of these slogans we’re seeing.
Their first cry, “No justice! No peace!” makes sense, no confusion there.
“Black Lives Matter” makes sense, but got some folks bent out of shape.
“Defund the Police!” What on Earth does that mean?
For some it means exactly as it sounds, that protesters are demanding a community completely devoid of Law Enforcement and, in some communities, that is their intention.
For others it means an opportunity to throw the same disproved “reforms” at the wall and in a few weeks get back to normal. I have no doubt some agencies are hoping for exactly that.
We at WYE took it a different way and (gasp) landed in the middle, looking at what many folks have always been asking: Can Law Enforcement be better?
Short answer? Yes. But how? This week Justin sits Jason down and tells him “OK, I’ve defunded the Police, now rebuild it from scratch. What stays, what goes, what gets highlighted? Go.”
What follows is a discussion including:
- Introducing efficiency and simplicity into reporting
- More action from law makers to hold those arrested accountable instead of issuing a citation
- Expanding capabilities and staffing of “Community Aides” for non injury collisions, noise complaints and other minor issues
- A better definition of “high level of service” some bureaucrats seem to think means lights and sirens and a gun to every single complaint.
While the guys do wander off topic more than a few times, listening to a 20+ year veteran police officer smile as he describes how to improve the entire system will inspire you. Finding out he retires in 21 months will knock you back to reality.
