6 Steps to Financially Prepare for Retirement

Podchaser - What’s Your Emergency

You might think this is a show about the end of your career, but we’ve got advice for you new people.

As you may or may not know your co-host Jason is a family financial expert and has lived all of the advice we’re giving this week. And your other co-host Justin has followed many of the same principles and found himself in a financial situation he never thought he’d be in.

Here are the six things every new public safety provider needs to do as soon as possible before retirement:

  • Get on a written budget
  • Pay off consumer debt
  • Maximize 410K, Deferred Compensation and other investing
  • Refinance your home loan
  • Consider downsizing both house size and financial footprint
  • Construct an exit strategy

Even though Jason is on his way out the door, this advice is actually meant for his younger self, imagining just how much more successful he could have been if only someone had told him what to do earlier.
