Ask WYE – Issue 42 – What to expect at your Volunteer Firefighter Interview

Old friend of the show and noted Patron, Phil, chimes in this week with a question that he called Justin at home about (no, not all our patrons get our home numbers): What should I expect at my Volunteer Firefighter Interview?

Career fire jobs have almost a cottage industry built up at the front door to teach you how to sit, how to answer, how to react, probably even how to smell to get that coveted career fire job, but what about the Volunteer companies?

This week, Justin tackles this question with some of the same advice he offered Phil over the phone in an effort to take some stress out of becoming a volunteer firefighter. This week you’ll learn:

  • What kind of fire and rescue scenarios you’ll be expected to answer
  • Tips and tricks to answer the dreaded “Why would you be a good fit for our department?” question
  • Steps to take before you even apply for the spot
  • Whether or not Phil got the nod to join his local VFD

If you have a question for our experts, drop it via email to Justin@WYERadio.com for the fire and medical type stuff and Jason@WYERadio.com for all that police type stuff and we’ll do our best to answer them. Afraid of typing? Just use the blue microphone on our homepage and it’ll record a 90 second audio clip and send it straight to us, no editing or emailing required.
